La Tigra de San Carlos Costa Rica
is located in north central Costa Rica (San Carlos), on the Atlantic slope of the Tilarán mountain range, 30 kilometers (19 miles) due east of Montverde, 45 kilometers (28 miles) north of San Ramon and due west of Ciudad Quesada. It is a one and a half hour drive from the airport and a two hour drive from San José.

The average rainfall is 3.9 meters per year, primarily falling from May to December. During the dry season there is usually a maximum of 30 days without rain. Temperatures range from 62-87 degrees Fahrenheit. The soils are of volcanic origin and well drained.

Both the Peñas Blancas, Los Cerritos and San Gerado farms are located on a "flyway" for migrating birds and butterflies. One can see hundreds, sometimes thousands, at a time, of hawks, swallowtail kites and vultures. There are more than 270 bird species in the area, including quetzals, bell birds, umbrella birds, trogans, toucans, parrots and many seasonal songbirds. More than 450 species of butterflies have been identified in the area. Wildlife abounds in and around the farms. I have seen three types of cats and jaguar tracks on the farms.

Lake Arenal, Arenal volcano and Tabacon hot springs are 45 minutes away on a paved road from the San Gerado and Cerritos farms and 1 hour from the Peñas Blancas river farm.
